Nation at Risk from Listeria Contamination of Certain Boar’s Head Provisions Co’s Inc. meat and poultry products

On July 19th 2024, Boar’s Head Provisions Co., a well-known producer of deli meats and cheeses, expanded its recall of ready-to-eat meat and poultry products. As a leading firm in food-borne illness cases who has successfully litigated  numerous outbreak cases both as individual cases and as class actions, we feel that it is our responsibility to inform you of the outbreak and offer help if you have been affected.

Boar’s Head is recalling approximately 7 million additional pounds of ready-to-eat meat and poultry products after the Maryland Department of Health found a liverwurst sample that tested positive for the outbreak strain of Listeria monocytogenes.

This additional recall expands the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Food Safety Alert that was updated on August 28th.  Fifty-nine people across 19 states have become ill, with 59 hospitalizations and 10 deaths as of September 25th. Currently, New York is the state with the highest number of reported cases. This map shows where the people live who have reported illness associated with the Board’s Head listeria outbreak.

Listeria is especially harmful to people aged 65 and older, who are pregnant, or who have weakened immune systems. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service, “Listeriosis can cause fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions sometimes preceded by diarrhea or other gastrointestinal symptoms… In people who are pregnant, the infection can cause miscarriages, stillbirths, premature delivery or life-threatening infection of the newborn. In addition, serious and sometimes fatal infections can occur in older adults and persons with weakened immune systems.”

What to do if you are affected

The recalled products were produced between May 10 and July 29, with expiration dates ranging from July 29th to October 17th. The Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) recommends that people who own one of the recalled products throw it away or return the product for their own safety.
